BATTLEDRESS
“In 1980’s Sheffield, we dressed in jockey silks, danced like we meant it and fought because we had to” (Genn 2021) Battledress uses oral history and archive to create alternative histories of working-class women’s experiences of fighting, fashion and allegiance. Exploring challenging themes of women’s violence, its relationship to power (and perceived invincibility) and especially how fashion fits with these themes. The project seeks to illuminate how immersive techniques can create ‘encountered’ narratives that disturb the way existing working-class histories are framed. The first phase of this research is a a two screen immersive film exhibited at: Events Central, Fargate, Sheffield 15th -25th September 2022 as part of Festival of the Mind, Sheffield. Artist talk 20th Sept 2022. Spiegeltent, Barkers Pool, Sheffield Under an Artificial Sun is a Wellcome Trust funded research project investigating the emotional legacy of hospitalisation due to childhood tuberculosis at Stannington Sanatorium, near Morpeth, Northumberland. The project focuses on materials in the Stannington Sanatorium collection at Northumberland Archives. The research uses creative methodologies to explore connections between this archival material and contemporary debates around isolation, resilience, creativity and boredom within child development. It seeks to uncover untold stories of childhood hospitalisation and understand how these experiences may have shaped children's lives in unexpected or seldom-discussed ways.

Reaching for the Stars is large scale video installation. A young woman continually jumps in the air. The camera films her bouncing on a trampoline for 24 hours, wearing an array of different outfits. We never see the trampoline which gives the illusion of a woman constantly in mid-air, either falling or rising, but never being allowed to rest. Reaching for the Stars is a collaborative project between Debbie Ballin filmmaker Annie Watson and cinematographer Robbie Ryan. |
